Without it, you can't summon your Persona properly. If you sleep in the school overnight and get tossed into a random place, you'll have no way to leave without fighting and then die in various ways: 1) being mauled by Shadow monsters and 2) dying of thirst and/or starvation. Electronics don't work during the midnight phase, so you'll be trapped without being able to tell anyone where you are.
