[ He's dead and then he's alive again, staring up at the ceiling and then over at Jiro and that poor guy that he tears his gaze away from, because yeah, it sure was Kano's idea to do this. Sorry imaginary soldier. If Kano weren't so stupid, because nobody would have to suffer so many times, but this is where we are.

He shifts the collar so the lock is at Jiro's back and he doesn't have to look at him either, poking at it once in a while but just to give the impression that he's doing something, while he's otherwise just staring across the arena and thinking.

This is a dungeon. It's never as straightforward as finding a key and opening a door; in the lake they had to do a variety of tasks to gather coins to open a door, and in here they're supposed to be clearing these floors to gather cards for the same purpose. The floors, as far as he knows, are split between what people remember and what make people freak out. This one isn't his memory, and it isn't Jiro's or otherwise he'd know what's going on. It's somebody's fear. Are they scared of fighting? Of dying? Maybe Kano's supposed to be the one to kill Jiro, instead of letting the others do it, or immediately giving up when it's his turn. He can't fight. He has no other weapon besides the omamori in his boot, and that's not working here either. He can still feel Ala; she's there, screaming and pounding at the side of his head, but she can't come out. He unbuckles and pulls off his boot to shake the omamori out again, holding it in his hand. Nothing. The boot goes back on. He doesn't look at the lock, because he's too busy being in his own head, going ??? how do I kill Jiro with this flimsy thing? What exactly is the fear? People being forced to fight? Friends being forced to fight? Friends being forced to fight, except one of them's been transformed and the other doesn't recognize them— somehow, he and Jiro managed, so that's a step in the right direction. Friends recognize each other, and they wouldn't want to fight, so they're not supposed to. They'd try to escape. Kano can get out of his cell once Jiro's killed the others, and then it's his turn to get the collar off and that should be the end of it.

Get the collar off.

He's been staring into space for ten minutes and has made zero progress aside from finally having the omamori in his hand, but coming right back to where he started in the end: how the hell is he supposed to get the collar off? ]
