INTRO LOG

"Persona, Persona, please come here."

→ I.

The words linger in the back of your mind, but whether it’s your own thoughts or somebody else’s, ceases to matter in light of more pressing things. For one: actual light, mid-summer daylight streaming down upon your face, dust in the air glowing almost golden. Next to your hand lies a cloth omamori, each character’s a different color but all bordered with gold thread, a little black bird stitched in one corner, and… at the bottom...

It is your preferred name, along with another word. For those familiar with tarot, they may recognize it as one of the major arcana. Regardless, it seems to be meant for you, so it might be a good idea to hang onto it.

Looking around, all around you are broken stone pillars and crumbling walls, a spiral staircase that leads to an upper floor that has partially caved in, requiring a bit of a leap to make it to the top. From the outside, the structure looks like a castle, situated in a clearing otherwise surrounded by forest. From the inside, it appears as if no person has been here for a long time. Birds have made their nests in the upper story, eggshells scattered across the floor, and sticks and straw breaking off the nests in the dry summer heat. The occasional woodland animal can be found around the castle, skittish and quick to flee upon approach, but there are also several cats who seem to have no fear for strangers, rubbing against your ankles and padding off again unless you have food to bribe them to stay.

There is also a bear in deep sleep, in the middle of the main hall all characters awake in. Please do not disturb, or you may find yourself in the middle of a bear attack, completely disconnected from any special powers or abilities you may have. Curiously, any injuries you might remember last having seem to be in the process of healing, though by varying degrees, and maybe we shouldn’t undo that! There isn’t a hospital out here in the middle of nowhere, after all. You’ll have to venture out of the castle in search for help like that.

A field of dry grass forms the clearing around the castle, with two paths on opposite sides leading into the forest:

A stone path, though broken up and partially buried in the dirt, will lead you out of the forest and towards the town, given you don’t wander off the path to be lost in the woods. But it’s alright if you do! If you keep wandering the forest, you may eventually come across the mountains. And if mountains aren’t an obvious enough sign you should turn back, you can continue through the short mountain range to find yourself back inside the forest; keep on going and eventually you’ll arrive at the opposite side of town. It’s the long way around, but you’ll make it either way.

The road less traveled, however, is one of just dirt, a narrow path that’s been cleared away but after all this time, the weeds have started encroaching again on both sides to reclaim the space. Following this path will take you to a set of stairs, dusty and crumbling but sound enough that you can climb it to the top and find a shrine. A fox yaps at you, and ducks away into the trees behind the shrine. The place could really use some cleaning up, from having the steps swept, to the water in the basin being changed out, to fixing up the sign stating what deity is worshipped here— it’s been broken apart, the name seared off the surface of the rotting wood. Who knows what it used to say…? There doesn’t seem to be anybody around at the shrine, nor anywhere in the forest.

Civilization can finally be found in the town, but the people here just look at you curiously, unsure of what you’re talking about if asked about how you got here, and laughing a little when you inquire about the town, though happy enough to talk about their home. ...That’s strange, though? The language spoken here is Japanese, what sounds like an older dialect, and regardless of what you’re used to speaking, you find that you can speak and understand the language here without trouble. How convenient!

While much of the townspeople are bustling around in the mid-day, there are still others more than willing to show you around, or to point you in the right direction if you’d rather wander and explore on your own. Even if you feel like you don’t need a guide, there are plenty of stray cats loitering around the town more than happy to escort you wherever you go. For those who are injured, the walk-in clinic at the hospital has its doors open to treat anybody who needs tending to, for a small fee. Don’t have money? The townspeople are more than happy to hire you on, especially with what seems to be preparation for a festival to be held at the school at the end of the month. The students in the school are also eager to receive what help they can get, building sets, figuring out menus, or creating enough decorations to cover the school twice over.

Whether it’s cooking, mending, delivering, or something else, there’s a variety of odd jobs to be done, and the extra pocket money will serve to be helpful, especially once night falls. The temperature will dip overnight, a dense field of stars covering the sky like a blanket when the sun sets and the moon takes its place, but it’s warm enough in the summer that camping outside is a viable option for those who are used to sleeping outside or want to save money. No worries keeping warm without blankets, either; there’s a good chance a stray cat will wander by and sleep on your face. The inn, rumors have it, is haunted… but it may be the cheapest option if you want a roof over your head and not a broken castle or a cat.

[ rei is just as startled when terry shrieks and she jumps back. she certainly wasn't suspecting anything but now she is!! stares at... ]

It looked like you were doing something, though...

[ He's starting to sound desperate, even if Rei looks... pretty harmless.

Terry is seriously getting owned by people younger than him literally everywhere in this post. Someone save him. ]

[ no. let terry suffer. let all of haki's characters suffer. ]

You didn't put anything away in your pocket, then?

[ she doesn't sound suspicious. she just wants to know what's going on :( ]

Well, I mean... I do have something in my pocket...

[ That's not what he meant to say, but he pulls out an omamori out of his pants pocket anyway. The blood packet remains safe in his hoodie pocket. ]

[ she is a naive little girl who will accept that answer. the blood will be left alone for another day... ]

Oh, you have one too! I found this when I woke up.

[ immediately, she somehow feels better and not as skittish as before. is it because it seems like there is someone else here who shares something similar with her? perhaps. it's probably best if she doesn't blindly walk over to someone much taller than her (she's only 150cm...) and is slightly sketchy like terry, but she does that anyway. she pulls out her own omamori out of her pocket and shows it to him. her is a cute yellow colour, decorated with white flowers (similar to the ones in her hair), and has both her name ("philei") and her arcana ("sun"). ]

[ You wonder why Terry feels bad...

When Rei walks up to him, he feels kinda bad about towering over her. But she's not that small for him to kneel down for. It's an awkward middle, so he'll just bend his back a bit so that he doesn't loom over her as much. ]

Yours is cute! They really personalized it just for you... [ He takes note of the flower design and the ones in her hair. When he reads the "sun" portion, he feels like it fits her because of her long blond hair. Actually, while this is cute, he actually finds this creepy. How did they know her name? How did they make one that fits her so well? What the fuck. ]

So your name is... Philei? [ Pronounced it as fi-lay. ] Mind if I just call you Phi? I'm Terry.

Mmhm, but only Zen calls me that sometimes.

[ like...... two times. the name is quite meaningful for her so she's glad to see it on her omamori. it's not the name that she's used to being called, though, and she supposes that it's only for special occasions and for zen's use so she's okay with being referred to by another name. ]

You can call me "Rei"! I-It's nice to meet you, Terry-san.

[ she tries to do a small bow with her head. she's still pretty uptight about everything around her so she's a little awkward with her movements. ]

Did you just wake up here as well...?

[ She's such a polite little girl... so cute... Terry wants to protect her from all evils now. After he snaps out of it, he nods. ]

Yeah, though it's been a while.

[ So that it'll be fair, Terry lets Rei take a closer look at his own omamori. It has his full name etched on there along with "strength". The omamori itself looks like it has a pretty average design, which he doesn't mind really. ]

Actually, I feel kinda hungry... what about you?

[ the moment that he mentions that he's hungry, she immediately perks up. it's almost like he flipped on a switch. she goes from shy to instantly perky and full of life. ]

I'm always hungry!

[ ... can you tell what rei's favourite thing in the world. it starts with "e" and ends with "ating everything that she can get her hands on". ]

[ The sudden demeanor surprises him, but it's a surprise that he'll welcome openly. He grins in return. ]

Always hungry, huh...?

[ It makes him wonder if she came here by herself... someone would have to make food for her to keep her happy. Hm... ]

There's probably nothing to eat around here. Wanna go look in the forest to see if there's anything?

Yeah, that sounds good!

[ food is the way to her heart. feed her and she will Die For You. besides, she has already found solace in the fact that terry is also a new arrival like her so that gets her naive side to smooth things over. ]

I think I saw some mushrooms earlier. We can eat those!

Mushrooms?!

[ He isn't well versed in mushrooms, but he does know horror stories that came out of them. He looks a bit unsure, but is looking to lead REI back into the thickets of the trees. ]

Are those the safe ones...?

All food is delicious! Food is kind and sweet and would never hurt me.

[ ... ]

[ "..." is right. Terry looks at Rei, not sure what to say. Should he just keep it straight with her and say that there are some mushrooms that are poisonous to humans? Actually, that makes him wonder--is she human? Maybe she has a filter (currently nonexistent) like he does, so he can usually shrug off mushrooms and stuff.

Well. ]

Rei... are you human?

[ she looks at him with a silent "huh?" but she doesn't seem very fazed by the question. ]

Of course I am!

[ ... don't ask if she's alive tho ]

[ Don't worry. He's learned not to ask people that anymore, especially to a little girl... ]

Oh, okay. Just asking.

[ What the hell Terry that sounds so suspicious. He's not aware of that though, and thinks to himself that he will do his best to protect her for the time being when she's with him, aka don't let her eat the bad shit. ]

We can go look for stuff together, but things are better cooked. So... we gather first and then cook it over a fire. How does that sound?

[ """anymore""", you say... ]

That sounds great!

[ cooked food!!!!!!!! that sounds even better!!!!!! she is so excited to eat that her worries are (mostly) put away for now. she needs to have a full stomach to go and find zen, after all! ]

Gathering, here we come!

[ she says but lmfao good luck, she's going to find random things on the floor and assume that she can eat them. ]

[ Terry looks excited right alongside her. He makes sure that she's not all that far from him when they do go searching for food. In the meantime, he gathers some branches and other things he can use as fire fuel.

Meanwhile, he's still keeping an eye on Rei as he gathers materials needed for fire...

He's really worried for her, okay. ]

[ he has every right to be worried because as she goes off and gathers every suspicious looking mushroom (brown with tiny spots and they all come in a bundle) that she can find. luckily, she doesn't decide to snack and have any of them because she should save and share it with terry first! so she just plucks every little mushroom and wild berries that she can fit into her hands and takes it back. ]

Look, I've found all these.

[ He looks down at what Rei gathered. Terry wishes he knew how to tell mushrooms apart, but you know what... he's getting really hungry. He hasn't eaten anything solid for a while. He might go under a trip by eating those mushrooms, but at least he'd have something in his stomach. ]

That's a great find, Rei! [ He wants to praise her more and keep her smiling forever q_q so precious

There's something missing though... Hm. Ah, yes. He puts down all the kindle he found onto the ground and takes off his hoodie jacket since the summer heat would probably just make him super hangry later. He has a t-shirt underneath so that isn't a problem. He spreads out the jacket and holds it out to her. ]

You can use this like a basket to hold all the stuff you find! It'll be easier to carry with it.

[ He totally forgot that the blood packet is in the pocket of that hoodie jacket, which is in the inside, so it won't fall out. But still. He's giving the jacket to Rei now. ]

[ i really hope that they have a mushroom trip in the middle of the forest on their first day here. anyway, she smiles when he offers the jacket. ]

Oh, thank you!

[ she drops her gatherings onto the jacket and then takes it, holding the ends so she can carry it around. don't worry, she'll discover the blood packet soon 8) ]

Are you doing okay on your search, Terry-san?

[ Terry nods enthusiastically in response. ]

Yeah! I found a good branch to use to light a fire too. I'm glad it's not raining or this would have been a total bust. [ He laughs a little as if to relieve himself from the actual direness of his current situation. ]

Oh, Rei. Step back for a bit.

[ He picks up something that looks like a small rock from the ground. ]

[ ...? she doesn't know why she needs to step back but she does so anyway. she eyes the small thing that terry has picked up, though she doesn't know what it is or what he's about to do. ]

[ Terry takes one good look up one of the trees and throws the small rock as hard as he can, seemingly aiming at something. Nothing falls except some leaves and... that's about it. He frowns at the result and sighs. ]

I guess I shouldn't have expected too much... I thought I saw a fruit up there, but...

[ He grabs a hold of the leaves that fell from that gathering attempt. ]

I think these are maple leaves.

[ ... ]

You wouldn't happen to know how to collect tree sap, do you?

[ tree sap? ohh, that sounds delicious! she's never had it but she knows that she'd already love it. ]

Maybe we just have to ask politely!

[ ... she sounds totally serious. ]
