"Persona, Persona, please come here."

→ I.

The words linger in the back of your mind, but whether it’s your own thoughts or somebody else’s, ceases to matter in light of more pressing things. For one: actual light, mid-summer daylight streaming down upon your face, dust in the air glowing almost golden. Next to your hand lies a cloth omamori, each character’s a different color but all bordered with gold thread, a little black bird stitched in one corner, and… at the bottom...

It is your preferred name, along with another word. For those familiar with tarot, they may recognize it as one of the major arcana. Regardless, it seems to be meant for you, so it might be a good idea to hang onto it.

Looking around, all around you are broken stone pillars and crumbling walls, a spiral staircase that leads to an upper floor that has partially caved in, requiring a bit of a leap to make it to the top. From the outside, the structure looks like a castle, situated in a clearing otherwise surrounded by forest. From the inside, it appears as if no person has been here for a long time. Birds have made their nests in the upper story, eggshells scattered across the floor, and sticks and straw breaking off the nests in the dry summer heat. The occasional woodland animal can be found around the castle, skittish and quick to flee upon approach, but there are also several cats who seem to have no fear for strangers, rubbing against your ankles and padding off again unless you have food to bribe them to stay.

There is also a bear in deep sleep, in the middle of the main hall all characters awake in. Please do not disturb, or you may find yourself in the middle of a bear attack, completely disconnected from any special powers or abilities you may have. Curiously, any injuries you might remember last having seem to be in the process of healing, though by varying degrees, and maybe we shouldn’t undo that! There isn’t a hospital out here in the middle of nowhere, after all. You’ll have to venture out of the castle in search for help like that.

A field of dry grass forms the clearing around the castle, with two paths on opposite sides leading into the forest:

A stone path, though broken up and partially buried in the dirt, will lead you out of the forest and towards the town, given you don’t wander off the path to be lost in the woods. But it’s alright if you do! If you keep wandering the forest, you may eventually come across the mountains. And if mountains aren’t an obvious enough sign you should turn back, you can continue through the short mountain range to find yourself back inside the forest; keep on going and eventually you’ll arrive at the opposite side of town. It’s the long way around, but you’ll make it either way.

The road less traveled, however, is one of just dirt, a narrow path that’s been cleared away but after all this time, the weeds have started encroaching again on both sides to reclaim the space. Following this path will take you to a set of stairs, dusty and crumbling but sound enough that you can climb it to the top and find a shrine. A fox yaps at you, and ducks away into the trees behind the shrine. The place could really use some cleaning up, from having the steps swept, to the water in the basin being changed out, to fixing up the sign stating what deity is worshipped here— it’s been broken apart, the name seared off the surface of the rotting wood. Who knows what it used to say…? There doesn’t seem to be anybody around at the shrine, nor anywhere in the forest.

Civilization can finally be found in the town, but the people here just look at you curiously, unsure of what you’re talking about if asked about how you got here, and laughing a little when you inquire about the town, though happy enough to talk about their home. ...That’s strange, though? The language spoken here is Japanese, what sounds like an older dialect, and regardless of what you’re used to speaking, you find that you can speak and understand the language here without trouble. How convenient!

While much of the townspeople are bustling around in the mid-day, there are still others more than willing to show you around, or to point you in the right direction if you’d rather wander and explore on your own. Even if you feel like you don’t need a guide, there are plenty of stray cats loitering around the town more than happy to escort you wherever you go. For those who are injured, the walk-in clinic at the hospital has its doors open to treat anybody who needs tending to, for a small fee. Don’t have money? The townspeople are more than happy to hire you on, especially with what seems to be preparation for a festival to be held at the school at the end of the month. The students in the school are also eager to receive what help they can get, building sets, figuring out menus, or creating enough decorations to cover the school twice over.

Whether it’s cooking, mending, delivering, or something else, there’s a variety of odd jobs to be done, and the extra pocket money will serve to be helpful, especially once night falls. The temperature will dip overnight, a dense field of stars covering the sky like a blanket when the sun sets and the moon takes its place, but it’s warm enough in the summer that camping outside is a viable option for those who are used to sleeping outside or want to save money. No worries keeping warm without blankets, either; there’s a good chance a stray cat will wander by and sleep on your face. The inn, rumors have it, is haunted… but it may be the cheapest option if you want a roof over your head and not a broken castle or a cat.

[ It is absolutely the worst way to wake up? It's a really really bad way to wake up, because even before seeing that Kokichi is shirtless, Kido sees his stupid clown mask and screams bloody murder and immediately throws a punch and sinks her fist into his stomach.

So, Kokichi is now dead, and the bear is waking up and lumbering over to see what the noise is all about. ]

[ i can't believe that kokichi ouma is already dead. thanks, card, i'll go submit my drop right now since there's nothing else for me to do. ]

[ anyway, kokichi wasn't expecting a punch that quickly (he was expecting some sort of reaction but not a fist into his gut right away...) so he takes it and okay, wow, this just kind of sucks. this is what he gets for trying to do a good deed! forget this!!! he's just going to be a super evil supreme leader and let everyone die instead!!!!! monokuma, zero, take him back to the murdergame so he can kill everyone now!!!!!! but anyway, he kneels over and the wind is sucked out of him. he actually can't breathe for a few seconds because holy shit, that is one hell of a punch and kokichi hasn't really eaten properly for the past few days so... yeah, he's just going to kneel over with one hand on the floor and the other gripping his stomach. ]

[ and the bear marches closer... ]

[ You're welcome Ichi I'm always here to make work easier for you

Kokichi learns that being a good person isn't worth it, and Kido learns that she just murdered a child(???) but before she can find somewhere to hide the body, she looks up to see the bear and freezes in place, wasting precious few seconds just staring and blanking on what to do.

It's only when Kokichi moves a little that her attention is drawn back to him, and she— assuming he is just about dead anyways and so he can't complain about her saving their lives- can only think to take the mask off the side of his head and slide it across the floor as a distraction.

It works, the bear turning its head towards the mask and giving it a curious look, and Kido takes Kokichi's arm and tries to drag him away, come on, that mask is not way important and sentimental right?? just leave it ]

[ we're only two threads in and kokichi probably has a terrible impression of kido already. first, she sucker punches him. second, she throws away his mask. it is extremely sentimental to him, jerk!! but he's not foolish enough to run back and grab it while the bear is awake. he just hopes that it won't be badly damaged or that the bear will just ignore it so he can go back for it later....... ]

[ he lets himself be dragged and hopefully, they get far enough away that they can talk without a giant totally-not-a-dog right on their tails. these two may avoid the bear for now... at least until kokichi decides to go back in on his own later :T anyway, assuming that they get away and after kokichi catches his breath. ]

... you shouldn't touch other people's belongings.

[ Can he say he doesn't deserve it, though?? Kido's just here preemptively doing everybody a favor.

Her side hurts and she's out of breath by the time they get far enough away, and she lets him flop down onto the ground so she can tower over him and look as menacing as she wants to believe she is. She's covered in blood. Maybe she can use that to make her look scarier. ]

There are more important things, you know? If you've gotten yourself hurt, or killed, what good are your belongings? We'll go back and retrieve your things once that bear leaves, but think of yourself first.

[ he was trapped in an enclosed elevator with a dude covered in blood because he just murdered someone. this happened only hours ago for him so he's fine. a little (a lot) of blood won't scare him, but he definitely will take notice of it. ]

Then use one of your own.

[ sorry, kokichi is kind of grumpy because of everything that happened before his arrival and then just a few minutes ago with being punched and losing his mask. ]

If you didn't scream and punch me, we probably would have gotten away just fine.

[ She could have used something of her own, but, hmm, no. Instead, she's going to engage in this petty argument, frowning and crossing her arms because first of all, he's not allowed to turn the blame back on herself. ]

That's only because you— [ scared her, but admitting that somehow feels like losing, so she bites that down and huffs. ]

It was a creepy mask, and where the hell is your shirt?

[ That has nothing to do with anything, but she'd like to know why he's not wearing a shirt??? what happened to it ]

Oh, that? I got mugged.

[ he says this so lightly that she could possibly doubt it. the real reason why it's missing is that he ripped it up to bandage red's arm. well, more like use it to try and cut off as much circulation as possible so red doesn't bleed out but sameish thing. it's not like he's going to actually tell her that so who cares if he's somewhat incorrect in the metatext. ]

You're looking way more suspicious and creepy than me. What's with all the blood?

Hm? I got mugged.

[ It's a bratty answer, just as suspicious and doubtful but who is Kokichi to say whether that's right or wrong? The truth is something like that anyways, except that instead of being punched and robbed, she was stabbed and left for dead. ]

[ okay, that answer is actually kind of amusing. it gets him to smile a bit because while it may be a bratty answer, it's a good one. ]

Wow, those muggers must have really hated to leave you in a state like that!

That mugger would be pissed to know I didn't die, most likely.

[ Which- after saying so- starts to spin her thoughts around, muddling them. She'd thought before that she was throw in here by whoever stabbed her, but that wouldn't make much sense, would it? If she really is still alive, then... isn't it that somebody saved her? And then dumped her next to a bear and this weirdo, so who really knows what side they're on, really.

SIGHS ]

Looks like we're both victims in this case. But that doesn't mean you should walk around unclothed. Here, I—-

[ ...She has two jackets and a shirt on but she really doesn't want to give any of her clothes to Kokichi, so ]

Well, it's summer, so it's warm out. Hopefully we'll be able to make progress before dark.

[ ... well, even if kido offered, kokichi wouldn't have accepted anything. he probably would have said something like "no thanks, i don't want your bloody leftovers!" and been a rude piece of shit about it, so he just looks over to the side. ]

Sure, sure, you can head out, but I'm going back in.

[ he's absolutely going to try and get his mask back. ]

[ She would have punched him in the face and said something childish like "You're bloody leftovers!" but they somehow avoided that.

Instead, Kido has to resist the urge to punch him in the face right now, knock him out so he can't go back to get his mask. ]

You will not. Didn't I just say you shouldn't go back until the bear leaves?

[ don't worry, card, we will get plenty of chances again in the future. kido needs to punch kokichi so he can cry about it. ]

Unlike you, I know how to stay quiet. I'll just slip in and right back out.

[ I can't wait for Kokichi to cry and then Kido will cry and Kokichi goes "just kidding!" and she punches him in the face again. ]

Hah. You underestimate me. I can go right up to that bear without it ever noticing me.

[ When will Kido realize her eye powers don't work? Never. ]

Uh-huuuuh. I'm sure you wouldn't make it two steps towards that bear before shaking in your shoes and screaming!

[ points at you points at me points at kokichi's punchable face

She can tell she's being goaded, but the joke's on Kokichi because she has full confidence the bear will never notice a thing, so she just scoffs and folds her arms over her chest. ]

I bet I can go right up to it and nab that ugly mask back right out from under its nose.

[ it's a crime that kokichi was only punched in the face once in canon, but i'm glad that this is just where their thread progressed to. ]

Nu-uh, I bet that you'd freeze up and immediately get eaten!

Well, I don't have anything on me, so I guess you'll just have to get a favour.

[ it's not like kokichi has much to give her anyway. he doesn't have a fucking shirt. what makes you think that he'd have anything on him??? and plus, he's not going to give away shuichi's hat or his smoke bomb. ]

[ She doesn't want his stupid hat or smoke bomb anyways!!! I say that about the hat but Ichi have you seen Kido's design when she was a little kid? The hat and all black keeps reminding me of Shuichi when I first saw the PV

Anyways, that's a useless and childish prize, but Kido will take it anyways, already turning on her heels to march back to the castle and prove Kokichi wrong. ]

I'll hold you to it. I'll let you have your mask back after you do that favor for me.

Anyways, it's not a death wish if she doesn't die! She doesn't believe so, anyways, turning around to shush him so he doesn't sabotage her mask stealing attempt by being so noisy, and then stepping carefully back into the castle to where the bear has put its head down and gone back asleep, mask lying on the ground next to its face. It looks okay... kind of slobbery, though, like the bear had licked it and decided it tasted gross.

Which limb does Ichi's other character want to see Card's other character lose today ]

[ okok kokcihi does stay quiet because you know what, he surprisingly doesn't want to see anyone get maimed?? wow, he actually cares about people?? hmm, but he follows kido to the main room of the castle. he obviously doesn't actually tag after her, just staying near the doorway so he can watch her. he's actually a little nervous about this, but he doesn't show it at all. he has a smoke bomb that he can use if things go badly but hopefully, it won't come to that... ]

But let's see if Kido's getting maimed today. Even without her powers, she's naturally quiet, not much of a presence at all as she steps into the room. They're slow, careful steps, and they're confident ones too, ones that take her all the way up to the bear without a problem.

With a smirk, Kido stoops and picks up the mask, a huff of laughter under her breath because take that, brat, don't underestimate her eye powers!!!

Except that small of a noise makes the bear open its eyes. It lifts its head. Kido, already walking away from the bear, doesn't notice. ]
