July Intro Log

→ I.
The words linger in the back of your mind, but whether it’s your own thoughts or somebody else’s, ceases to matter in light of more pressing things. For one: actual light, mid-summer daylight streaming down upon your face, dust in the air glowing almost golden. Next to your hand lies a cloth omamori, each character’s a different color but all bordered with gold thread, a little black bird stitched in one corner, and… at the bottom...
It is your preferred name, along with another word. For those familiar with tarot, they may recognize it as one of the major arcana. Regardless, it seems to be meant for you, so it might be a good idea to hang onto it.
Looking around, all around you are broken stone pillars and crumbling walls, a spiral staircase that leads to an upper floor that has partially caved in, requiring a bit of a leap to make it to the top. From the outside, the structure looks like a castle, situated in a clearing otherwise surrounded by forest. From the inside, it appears as if no person has been here for a long time. Birds have made their nests in the upper story, eggshells scattered across the floor, and sticks and straw breaking off the nests in the dry summer heat. The occasional woodland animal can be found around the castle, skittish and quick to flee upon approach, but there are also several cats who seem to have no fear for strangers, rubbing against your ankles and padding off again unless you have food to bribe them to stay.
There is also a bear in deep sleep, in the middle of the main hall all characters awake in. Please do not disturb, or you may find yourself in the middle of a bear attack, completely disconnected from any special powers or abilities you may have. Curiously, any injuries you might remember last having seem to be in the process of healing, though by varying degrees, and maybe we shouldn’t undo that! There isn’t a hospital out here in the middle of nowhere, after all. You’ll have to venture out of the castle in search for help like that.
→ II.
A field of dry grass forms the clearing around the castle, with two paths on opposite sides leading into the forest:
A stone path, though broken up and partially buried in the dirt, will lead you out of the forest and towards the town, given you don’t wander off the path to be lost in the woods. But it’s alright if you do! If you keep wandering the forest, you may eventually come across the mountains. And if mountains aren’t an obvious enough sign you should turn back, you can continue through the short mountain range to find yourself back inside the forest; keep on going and eventually you’ll arrive at the opposite side of town. It’s the long way around, but you’ll make it either way.
The road less traveled, however, is one of just dirt, a narrow path that’s been cleared away but after all this time, the weeds have started encroaching again on both sides to reclaim the space. Following this path will take you to a set of stairs, dusty and crumbling but sound enough that you can climb it to the top and find a shrine. A fox yaps at you, and ducks away into the trees behind the shrine. The place could really use some cleaning up, from having the steps swept, to the water in the basin being changed out, to fixing up the sign stating what deity is worshipped here— it’s been broken apart, the name seared off the surface of the rotting wood. Who knows what it used to say…? There doesn’t seem to be anybody around at the shrine, nor anywhere in the forest.
→ III.
Civilization can finally be found in the town, but the people here just look at you curiously, unsure of what you’re talking about if asked about how you got here, and laughing a little when you inquire about the town, though happy enough to talk about their home. ...That’s strange, though? The language spoken here is Japanese, what sounds like an older dialect, and regardless of what you’re used to speaking, you find that you can speak and understand the language here without trouble. How convenient!
While much of the townspeople are bustling around in the mid-day, there are still others more than willing to show you around, or to point you in the right direction if you’d rather wander and explore on your own. Even if you feel like you don’t need a guide, there are plenty of stray cats loitering around the town more than happy to escort you wherever you go. For those who are injured, the walk-in clinic at the hospital has its doors open to treat anybody who needs tending to, for a small fee. Don’t have money? The townspeople are more than happy to hire you on, especially with what seems to be preparation for a festival to be held at the school at the end of the month. The students in the school are also eager to receive what help they can get, building sets, figuring out menus, or creating enough decorations to cover the school twice over.
Whether it’s cooking, mending, delivering, or something else, there’s a variety of odd jobs to be done, and the extra pocket money will serve to be helpful, especially once night falls. The temperature will dip overnight, a dense field of stars covering the sky like a blanket when the sun sets and the moon takes its place, but it’s warm enough in the summer that camping outside is a viable option for those who are used to sleeping outside or want to save money. No worries keeping warm without blankets, either; there’s a good chance a stray cat will wander by and sleep on your face. The inn, rumors have it, is haunted… but it may be the cheapest option if you want a roof over your head and not a broken castle or a cat.

It wouldn't explain anything about why she is here, though, in this place and with people she immediately shied away from when she saw the bodies on the ground, choosing to stick to the walls and keep in the shadows and watch the cats in peace—- but she can't just ignore the sound of somebody yelling, turning just in time to Kaede fall. Kido hesitates for a second, but pushes past that and walks quickly- cautiously- up to Kaede's... general vicinity. Kaede gets her personal space. ]
Oi, what happened? Did you twist your ankle?
no subject
The horned girl forced herself up onto one elbow, at least, looking at the source of the voice over her shoulder. She got her breath back before she answered, but her strained-taut voice did little to conceal the pain she was in.]
...can't feel my legs.
[Among other things. But that one felt the most obvious, and just as concerning. Kaede couldn't do anything from here--no vector answered her, but that wasn't a surprise. She couldn't even feel the dirt and grass under her knees except maybe as a tingling, periodic pressure.]
no subject
Did you... perhaps land on your back somehow?
[ That's how it usually happens, right? Break the spine in the right place, and you're paralyzed. There's the glance up at the top of Kaede's head, but Kido quickly averts her eyes— maybe the other girl landed on her head and that's pieces of her skull poking out through her hair???? The thought makes Kido feel a bit sick, so she turns her thoughts away from that, gulps down a couple of deep breaths.
What should she do? What's the correct thing to do here? She can feel the panic creeping up the back of her neck, and there's nobody else around to help. ]
no subject
Don't...think I did. I just woke up here.
[Maybe she fell off that tower. Yes, and regrew her legs on the way down. Kaede scoffed at herself, and tried to push herself up again. It didn't get her much farther than last time.]
Wasn't even supposed to wake up.
no subject
Kido watches her try and fail to stand, and leans down, offering her hand to help Kaede up. ]
What do you mean by that? Not supposed to wake up?
[ Because that sort of makes it sound like she expected to be dead. Like how Kido expected to be dead, to have her stomach torn open and never wake up again, let alone being able to stand and speak and exist in a place like this. ]
no subject
You don't just come back from being torn apart.
[Well. There was more to it. But that was all Kaede wanted to elaborate on right now.]
no subject
...No, we're not supposed to come back. But regardless, we're here, and I won't leave you behind. Give me your hand.
no subject
Who are you?
[There's a few specks and spots of blood on the outside of the jacket--the real mess was on the inside, but Kaede was in the way. It had dried, but smears had already made their way onto her clothes.
But the jacket seems a bit too big to fit her. Most of her clothes seemed a bit mismatched--from colors that didn't quite go together to just being too large, like they'd been cobbled together from things other people owned.]
no subject
She crouches down so she can rest her arm on her knee, because she still hasn't taken it back. ]
Kido. That's my name. I was killed, and then woke up here, just like you.
no subject
That admission finally got Kaede to relent, just a bit--just enough to take that offered hand. Her grip was tight, her hand soft in some places and roughened by calluses and little scars from grabbing things she shouldn't and being too stubborn to let go of.
Kaede was still watching the other girl warily, but her expression wasn't quite as severe as before.]
no subject
Get on. I'll give you a piggyback ride until we can find somewhere safer to rest.
[ Everything hurts, but she's still better off than Kaede is. When she was little, Kido would get rides from her brother all the time... now it's her turn. ]
no subject
She didn't want to do this--rely on another person who'd she'd met all of a few minutes ago. But she didn't have much of a choice. And the moment her concentration lapsed, her knees buckled and she fell forwards, flopping onto Kido's back.]
no subject
...it's a slow walk, admittedly, Kido trying her hardest not to make the ride too bumpy, though the ground is uneven in places and she has to slow down even more to make sure they don't both go toppling over. ]
Alright... so... I don't know where to go. If it's okay with you, I'm just going to keep walking straight, along the most even path I can find. If you spot anything out there, let me know.
no subject
With an exasperated sigh, Kaede stopped trying to wriggle around and just curled her arms around the other girl's shoulders. She felt a tingling numbness at her fingertips occasionally, but she could still control them. Small blessings.
Kaede didn't protest when jostled, though she did scan the forest to the sides as much as she could. It'd help her as much as Kido.]
I haven't seen anything except the ruins.
[Granted, she'd been awake for like five minutes.]
no subject
Where you lived before, was it anywhere near a forest? If you know anything about them in general, that would help a lot.
[ Compared to Kido who did live next to a forest, for a couple of years, but hadn't spent much time in it. ]
no subject
...yes. But there was an ocean nearby. The forest was back towards the mountains. Had a few shrines in it.
no subject
I wonder if we'll find anything like that... I don't know how common shrines are, but it would be good to find a place like that to sit and rest.
